Do you support Microsoft® FrontPage 98?

Certainly, though you will be missing out on the any new or enhancements to existing features released in FrontPage 2000. While the server extensions we install on your account are meant for FrontPage 2000, they are also compatible with FrontPage 98 or any other previous version of FrontPage.

What operating systems can I use with FrontPage?

Microsoft® has developed versions of its popular FrontPage web authoring program for the Windows 95/98/NT/2000 environments, as well as the Mac OS.

What software do I need to use FrontPage?

In order to create your website with FrontPage, you will need to install FrontPage 98, FrontPage 2000, or FrontPage Express on your computer. FrontPage Express comes bundled with some versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer®. While any of these programs will work, to use all of the features available, you need to use FrontPage 2000.

What kind of technical support do you offer for FrontPage?

As with all of our supported software, we only offer technical support. In other words, if you attempt something and receive an error, we can check to make sure that the files you need are properly installed, etc. We cannot, however, teach you how to use FrontPage.

If you're interested in learning how to use FrontPage, please visit Microsoft's online FrontPage Tutorial.

How do I determine if FrontPage Extensions are installed on my website?

To determine if FrontPage Extensions are installed on your website, type this in your browser address bar:

     http://www.mydomain.com/_vti_inf.html

You will see a message like this:

FrontPage Configuration Information

In the HTML comments, this page contains configuration information that the FrontPage Explorer and FrontPage Editor need to communicate with the FrontPage server extensions installed on this web server. Do not delete this page.

That means your extensions are installed. If you don't see this message or get a "404 Page Not Found" error, please contact us so we may install your extensions.

Why does FrontPage just hang when establishing a connection to my account?

There a number of reasons why FrontPage hangs, the biggest reason is related to the amount of data in your directory, both in size and number of files and directories. The more files/directories and size of data, the longer it will take FrontPage to log in. Large amounts of data (>50MB) and/or a large number of files or directories (>500) can cause FrontPage to hang and perhaps even timeout. If there are connectivity problems between your ISP and our servers, then this can also lead to FrontPage hanging or even timing out.

How do I publish my site with FrontPage?

  • Make sure you have an open connection to the Internet
  • Open the FrontPage web you'd like to publish
  • Click on "File" (top left-hand corner of screen) then "Publish Web"
  • A Publish Web dialogue box will appear. Enter in where you'd like to publish the site in this format: http://www.mydomain.com.
  • Decide whether you want to "Publish changed pages only" or "Publish all pages, overwriting any already on the destination" and click the appropriate box. If you don't see these selections, click on the "Options" button.
  • Leave the other check boxes blank
  • Click OK. You will be prompted for your username and password. This is the username & password you received in your welcome email when you signed up for our hosting services.
  • Once you have published, you will not be prompted for the username and password again until you close FrontPage and open it again.

Can I use FTP and FrontPage

Do not use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to publish your FrontPage site. FrontPage expects that webs will be published through the FrontPage Explorer. If you use FTP, components of your web (web bots in particular) may not function properly, and you will have to reinstall your FrontPage extensions (see below).

What are those _ (underscore) files in my folder?

If you are using FrontPage, those _folders & files are very important. They hold all the information your website needs to run FrontPage. Do NOT delete them!

I want to use FrontPage's built in database connectivity. What do I do?

To use FrontPage's built in database connectivity, you will need to put your database in a folder called fpdb. FrontPage will create this for you when you use the database wizard. You can not put your database in a a folder outside the /web folder if you are using FrontPage's built in database connectivity.

Every time I publish with FrontPage 98, it publishes to my local disk, not the server.

The most likely cause is that you have a proxy server specified in the FrontPage configuration. From the main menu of FrontPage, select "Tools", "Options". Select the tab named "Proxies". In the field "HTTP Proxy" there should not be an entry. If there is a proxy server specified in this field, delete it and press the "Ok" button to exit the options section. Try publishing your web again.
