How do I make my web page load automatically?

In order to have a page load automatically when someone accesses your address, please make sure the page you'd like to have automatically open (i.e.: the page that will open when someone goes to www.yourdomain.com) is one of the following:

  • index.htm
  • index.html
  • default.htm
  • default.html
  • default.asp

You should not have more than one page with the above names inside the same directory. If you do, you should delete and/or rename the page that you don't want to automatically load.

How do I request statistics to be added to my website (i.e. track where my visitors come from, etc.)? What if my stats aren't working?

Statistics are automatically generated for your website, you don't need to do anything. To access your site's stats, go to http://www.yourdomain.com/~stats and when prompted, enter your site administration username and password. These will be the Domain ID and Password you received when you signed up for your hosting account (unless you have since changed the password).

If your stats are still not working 1 week after your domain was activated on our servers, please contact Tech Support

Can I delete the _underscore directories in my Web directory?

You may delete these files if you don't use FrontPageŽ. These files and directories are a necessity to run FrontPageŽ. If you use FrontPageŽ and you have accidentally deleted these files, please send an email to Tech Support so we can reinstall them.

What is a MX record, and how do I change it?

Your hosting account's MX record specifies how mail addressed to your domain is to be handled. By default, such mail is handled by our mail servers and distributed according to your Email Settings. Some users may wish to have mail handled by a remote mail server. In such instances, the MX record can be changed such that all mail addressed to your domain is redirected to the remote server.

To change this, please email our Systems Operation Center.

How can I add Midi music to my site?

You can add sound or music to spice up your web site by embedding a MIDI file in your page. MIDI files are typically only about 15 to 25k in size, so they do not take very long to load. You can use MIDI files as background music on your page by adding the following code to the section of your html file:

<embed src="yoursong.mid" autostart=true hidden=true> <noembed><bgsound src="yoursong.mid"></noembed>

Replace "thesong" with the name of the MIDI file that you are using. This code excerpt will support people using Netscape or Internet Explorer.

To make a MIDI file play "on request" in the foreground, you link directly to the MIDI file using a hyperlink.

Why aren't my graphics displaying?

Make certain that all graphics files are uploaded in binary mode. Use the "auto" mode in your FTP program if it has that option. Make certain that your graphics are properly saved in one of the following formats: GIF or JPG. Web servers do not support any other graphics types. Macintosh users need to upload all graphics files in Raw Data format (not Mac Binary) with the appropriate extension. You also need to pay attention to UPPER and lower case names. On Linux servers, filenames are always case sensitive. Also note that all text documents should be uploaded in ASCII text, and that those files are case sensitive as well.

By far the biggest culprit of missing graphics is due to improper path references in your HTML documents.

How do I update my webpages?

You can create and maintain your web pages, images, and scripts locally and upload them to the web server at your leisure via FTP programs such as WSFTP, CuteFTP, and Fetch. You can overwrite existing files or transfer a new file. If you are using FrontPageŽ, you CANNOT USE FTP, you must use FrontPage's built-in Publishing Tool.

What are Secure Socket Layers (SSL)?

SSL is the standard mechanism for establishing a secure channel of communications between the client (your computer) and the server. SSL combines encryption schemes such as public key encryption, authentication, digital signing, and certificates. SSL provides authenticated and encrypted link through which any sort of TCP socket communication can take place. We can use SSL to provide a secure conduit for HTTP requests and responses so that sensitive information like credit card numbers and finances can be transmitted securely across the World Wide Web. We use this technology on our secure servers. To request space on the Secure Server, please send a request via email.
